The M3 medium tank of the United States was a famous tank in the early period of World War II. The total production of the M3 medium tank series reached 6,258, and it has many distinctive features, occupying a specific position in the history of the world's armor development. The full name of the M3 medium tank is the M3 "Grant"/"Lee" medium tank. In 1940, it was proposed to improve the M2 medium tank, thicken the armor, and install a 75mm howitzer in a protruding gun mount on the side of the hull. This new tank was named the M3 medium tank on July 11, 1940, by the U.S. Ordnance Commission. Due to the demands of the war, the M3 medium tank was approved for production soon after the design was completed. American Chrysler Company, Rolling Stock Company, Balwyn Rolling Stock Factory, etc., all produced test prototypes in April 1941. Formal production began in August 1941 and ended in December 1942. Over a year, more than 6,000 M3 medium tanks were produced. Although both are M3 medium tanks, the "Grant" and "Lee" tanks are slightly different. With a turret of British design, it was named "Grant" I. The standard M3 medium tank is called the "Lee" Type I. M3A1 is called "Lee" type II, M3A3 is called "Lee" type IV, M3A3 with diesel engine is called "Lee" type V, M3A4 is called "Lee" type VI, M3A5 is called "Grant" type II.
